Gmsh is an open source 3D finite element mesh generator with a built-in CAD engine and post-processor. Its design goal is to provide a fast, light and user-friendly meshing tool with parametric input and advanced visualization capabilities.

Gmsh is built around four modules: geometry, mesh, solver and post-processing. The specification of any input to these modules is done either interactively using the graphical user interface, in ASCII text files using Gmsh's own scripting language. To solve a problem, the FEM subdivides a large system into smaller, simpler parts that are called finite elements. The finite element method formulation of a boundary value problem finally results in a system of algebraic equations. The method approximates the unknown function over the domain. The FEM then uses variational methods from the calculus of variations to approximate a solution by minimizing an associated error function.

The subdivision of a whole domain into simpler parts has several advantages: [2].
